Camping is a great way to spend a weekend (or week!). Outdoors aficionados need no encouraging to pack up and spend their free time in a tent, but anyone who is new to it may need some convincing. Check out the best reasons why we love camping:
It improves your mood
Studies show that spending just two hours a week in nature can reduce stress and improve your general sense of wellbeing. Whether that’s in a forest, on top of a mountain, in a canyon, or out in the desert, immersing yourself in nature while camping is an ideal way to get out of civilization for a while.
It makes exercise enjoyable
Experts recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity every week to stay healthy. A moderate or even easy hike while camping is a beautiful way to keep in shape. Time flies when you’re taking in the tranquil sights and sounds of a woodland walk.
It limits screen time
Sometimes it feels like most of our time – whether we’re working or playing – is spent in front of a screen. Being able to disconnect for a few days gives our strained eyes and brains a break from the constant distraction of a glowing screen.
You may be tempted to bring a device along to watch or listen to something while you’re at camp, but try to avoid that temptation! There’s nothing nicer than watching a fire at night and listening to the quiet of the outdoors.
It expands your horizons
The U.S. has 61 national parks and over 10,000 state parks, so it’s likely that you live near at least one!
The national parks system is comprised of the most beautiful spots in America, and many of the state parks share similar scenery with a fraction of the crowds. Most national and many state parks have accessible, well-maintained campsites that are great for camping beginners and experts alike.
There’s something to do for everyone. Whether it’s relaxing in a hammock at camp, hiking, fishing, climbing, birdwatching, or whatever else appeals to you, once you find your favorite hobby you’ll be counting down the days until your next trip.
